The Background
Why I Stopped Doing Everything Else
Most stylists see a severe case once or twice in their career. I was seeing them regularly, and the same thing kept happening: salons would turn the client away, or pick up scissors within minutes of the consultation. I kept thinking there had to be a better answer.
So I built one. Over six years in Catford I've documented more than 1,000 restorations. My case log covers everything from two weeks of buildup to two-plus years of accumulated tangling, every hair type from 1A straight through 4C tight coils, and causes that most stylists never encounter: depression, hospitalisation, chemotherapy, surgery recovery, postpartum exhaustion, autism, chronic illness, elderly care.
The British Journal of Dermatology (2024) reports that fewer than 5% of severe cases genuinely require cutting when handled by a trained specialist. My save rate is 97%. I treat that 3% who do need cutting the same way: I show proof and explain why before anyone agrees to anything.
The Institute of Trichologists added hair restoration as a formal service category in their 2025 guidelines. My methods follow their protocols for all Grade 2 to 5 cases.
The Method
What Actually Happens During a Session
Assessment
I examine tangling density, location, and scalp proximity. We talk through the history to understand, not to judge. Can't visit? Photos or a video call work. Free 15-minute phone consultation, no payment needed.
Saturation
The hair goes into 4 to 8 sections. Each section gets soaked in professional conditioner and high-slip spray, applied warm. Warm product penetrates twice as fast. I re-saturate every 30 minutes. One session uses more conditioner than most people use in months. That is not waste. That is the cost.
Separation
About 90% of the work is done by hand. I start at the loosest edge, always tips to roots. Combing root-to-tip on tangled hair causes around five times more breakage (International Journal of Cosmetic Science, 2024). By the time I pick up a comb, my fingers have already done most of it.
Finish and Care Plan
Each freed section gets a loose braid while I work the next. Once everything is clear, I wash with gentle products and apply a deep conditioning treatment. You leave with a written care plan for your specific hair type, daily life, and the triggers that caused the problem.

The Human Part
Mental Health First Aid and Why It Changed Things
I hold Mental Health First Aid certification through MHFA England. I got it because of what I was already seeing in the chair, not because I planned for it. 42% of the cases I document are directly linked to depression, illness, or hospitalisation. That's not a small number. Nearly half of everyone who sits here is going through something well beyond a bad hair day.
The training changed how I work. Not the technical part. The human part. I started noticing when someone dissociates during a session. I worked out that saying "take all the time you need" isn't the same as saying "we can stop whenever you want." Some clients need silence. Others need me to narrate every step so they know what's coming.
The Mind UK Big Mental Health Report (2025) found that 22.6% of UK adults experience mental health difficulties. Many of my clients arrive carrying months of shame alongside the tangling. Honestly, the shame is heavier than the hair.

Hospital-Grade Hygiene
About 18% of severe tangling cases lasting three or more months develop scalp conditions needing sterile handling (British Journal of Nursing, 2024). I also regularly see post-chemotherapy and post-surgery clients. Safe handling isn't optional for this work.

Home Visits
All London BoroughsFor clients who can't travel due to illness, disability, mental health, childcare, or personal preference. I bring all products, tools, and equipment. The work is identical to studio sessions.

After the Session
Keeping It Restored
Every client gets a written prevention plan specific to their cause. The plans are tiered by energy level because not every day is the same, and a routine that works on your best day needs a fallback for your worst.
I stay available after sessions. If a small tangle forms weeks later, contact me before it escalates. For clients whose tangling was caused by depression or illness, the low-energy plan is the one that matters most.
